In connection with the UNDP/FAO Project UGA/87/007: Rehabilitation of Fisheries Statistics and Information Systems, a paper was prepared and presented at the International Symposium on Catch-Effort Sampling Techniques and their Application in Freshwater Fisheries Management, Humberside International Fisheries Institute, Hull, United Kingdom, 2–6 April, 1990.

Wise management of fisheries resources hinges on the knowledge of their magnitude, of their spatial and temporal distribution, variations in their annual recruitment levels and their general ecology. But the existing methods of statistical collection from the artisanal commercial lake fisheries are inadequate. A method based on stratified simple random sampling is therefore proposed for improving the catch assessment of the fisheries.

The proposed method can provide the desired precision of the estimates at the lowest possible cost in terms of money, time, manpower and equipment and yet possess a high degree of accuracy. Accurate data collection of the randomly selected statistical units is emphasised. The design and technique, which are illustrated with the fisheries of Lake Kyoga, are made as simple as possible for ease of application and for ready adoption or modification for use on other inland water fisheries.
